Unfortunately, on June 26, 2025, the federal government passed Bill C-5, which includes the Building Canada Act—a deeply concerning law that allows the government to fast-track infrastructure and energy projects it deems to be in the “national interest.”

As we warned, this law gives the federal government sweeping power to exempt projects from critical environmental protections, including the Species at Risk Act, Impact Assessment Act, Fisheries Act, and Canadian Environmental Protection Act. This means projects that could harm endangered species, destroy habitats, or pollute ecosystems can now move forward with minimal oversight, limited consultation, and reduced accountability.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who raised their voice and called on MPs to oppose this bill. Your advocacy mattered — and it continues to matter.

The story isn’t over: the Building Canada Act is already being challenged in court. Several First Nations in Ontario have launched a constitutional challenge against the legislation, arguing that it violates Indigenous rights and undermines environmental stewardship.

We will continue to monitor this case closely and stand in solidarity with those defending our environment, animals, and communities from the devastating impacts of this law.

Update: Bill C-5 Has Passed — But the Fight Isn’t Over
