Protect the Wahnapitae Dogs

Victory!

In Wahnapitae, Ontario, the future of 16 wolf-dog hybrids was uncertain in the summer of 2025. Provincial regulations prohibit keeping wolf-dog hybrids without special permits, and their guardian faced the possibility that the animals could be seized. With no clear plan for their welfare, we feared a devastating outcome — euthanasia by default.

On August 14, 2025, our Co-Director, Kira Berkeley, joined Global News’ Mornings with Simi to highlight these concerns. Throughout the process, the dogs’ guardian also made it clear that while he accepted responsibility, the animals should not pay the price with their lives.

We are relieved to share that the case has now been resolved with the dogs’ safety secured. The guardian pled guilty and received a $5,500 fine, but his continued advocacy helped ensure the animals will not be killed. Instead, they will be rehomed at an Ontario sanctuary, where they can live out their lives in peace.

We are grateful to all who spoke up in support of the wolf-dogs by writing to the Minister of the Solicitor General and Provincial Animal Welfare Services. Your voices, combined with the guardian’s commitment, helped push for a solution that prioritizes the animals’ welfare.
