Legal Services

AEL Advocacy provides free legal services to eligible charities and nonprofit organizations working at the intersection of animal and environmental protection.

We support organizations advancing systemic change, including efforts to transition toward plant-based food systems, challenge industrial animal agriculture and factory farming, protect endangered species and habitats, safeguard wildlife, and address the ecological systems that sustain animal life.

Our focus is on strengthening the legal capacity of organizations working to reduce animal suffering and environmental harm and to advance durable, systems-level change.

We work with organizations ranging from small, grassroots initiatives to large, multi-national nonprofits engaged in global efforts to end environmental exploitation and animal suffering.

We recognize that organizations in this space often operate with limited resources, high urgency, and complex legal and regulatory environments. Our role is to reduce barriers by providing accessible, mission-aligned legal support that strengthens the broader movement for animal and environmental protection.

Who We Serve

We work with:

  • Animal advocacy organizations

  • Environmental and climate justice groups

  • Indigenous-led initiatives advancing land, water, and animal protection

  • Community-based grassroots campaigns

  • Academic and policy partners engaged in law reform

Eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Organizations must demonstrate clear alignment with animal protection and/or environmental protection outcomes, particularly where their work reflects the interconnection between the two.

Priority is given to initiatives that advance systemic change and address root causes of harm to animals and ecosystems.

We are unable to provide services to for-profit entities or organizations whose primary mandate falls outside these areas.

What We Do

We provide targeted legal support that helps animal and environmental organizations operate more effectively within complex legal and regulatory systems. Our work is designed to strengthen organizational capacity so nonprofits and charities can pursue their missions with clarity, confidence, and structural support.

Our work includes:

Entity & Advocacy Structure Advising

We advise organizations on foundational legal and structural questions, including:

  • Selecting and establishing appropriate legal entities

  • Navigating charitable status and nonprofit registration requirements

  • Clarifying the legal boundaries of lobbying, political advocacy, and public campaigning

Strategic Advising for Campaigns & Initiatives

We support early-stage planning by providing legal insight to help shape effective and responsible advocacy strategies, including:

  • Designing campaigns with legal risk awareness

  • Structuring collaborations and coalitions

  • Identifying legal risks and opportunities in advocacy approaches

  • Advising on governance, messaging, and partnerships that may affect legal exposure

Legal Research & Drafting

We conduct legal research and drafting to support organizational work, including:

  • Reviewing reports, campaigns, and public communications to identify and mitigate legal risk prior to publication

  • Preparing research memoranda on emerging issues in animal and environmental law

  • Background legal research for advocacy campaigns

  • Translating complex legal frameworks into practical recommendations

  • Supporting law reform initiatives, policy development, regulatory submissions, and legislative analysis

Capacity Building & Training

We provide workshops, briefings, and resources to help organizations better understand the legal landscape affecting their work.

What We Do Not Do

To maintain clarity of scope and ensure high-quality support, we do not provide:

  • Litigation services

  • Legal representation in administrative proceedings

  • Rapid-response legal services (e.g. injunction applications, emergency responses to enforcement actions, or real-time legal intervention during protests or time-sensitive regulatory proceedings)

Our work is focused on preventative legal support, strategic advising, and transactional guidance that helps organizations reduce risk, strengthen compliance, and increase impact.
